Frustration
This forum is extremely frustrating and unwelcoming to new players. It is understandable that old players have seen a lot of changes to the game since its release. However, does that give ANY of you the right to be so dismissive of questions posed by new players or so judgmental in your responses? I've never actually posted here because I didn't feel the need to subject myself to such input from complete and utter strangers. I'm lucky I found a guild and alliance that is not only helpful but understands that at one time every player in a NEW player. Did any of you stop to consider that the reason you have so many gripes, complaints, and belly aches about the game is because you have forgotten that you were once new to the game and you too needed help at one time? Or did you all start out as perfect players who knew everything and were the gift to the gaming world?
I realize this thread will promptly be locked by moderators and/or I'll be trashed by the overwhelming majority of posters to this forum, but that says more about you than it does about me.

I dont flame new people unless they use the word 'plz'. The majority of people on gwg dont flame new players, but if the answer is really obvious and you still need help getting it, maybe you deserve it?

Obvious to whom? What is obvious to an old player is almost never obvious to a new player? So how exactly does that new player deserve to be flamed?

If a new player asks where hes gotta go for a quest (for instance) when it quite obviously states in the tutorial that by pressing 'L' will show you. He deserves whatever he gets then.

lol.
When I first started playing (early this year), I didn't know about the wiki until I re-read the manual and found the /wiki option. but that was only when I was somewhere near Frost Gate or some snowy place. GWwiki isn't obvious to a new player but I guess posters here kinda lost their patience after the 1st year of recommending the wiki

Many of the questions asked are repeated questions or ones easily answered had the poster done a little more research. Just because you are a long time player doesn't mean you are safe from flames if you happen to ask a dumb question. It happens, not just newbies get flamed on here. It's just the way of the forums I guess.

When I first joined I was never flamed, or treated like an idiot.
Just always check that there haven't been 30 threads already posted asking the same thing that you are.
People do understand that everyone has to start somewhere in game, but that's generally not an excuse for people who make a post asking something that's already been answered elsewhere.
There are alot of helpful people here at GwG and you'll find that alot of questions the new players have, have already been answered in existing threads .

i help newbs or i don't, the factor is determined by their stupidity
if you're running around in kamadan yelling to ask where the xunlai is i'll just /point and /laugh seriously
but others that need help with a build or something np
helped alot of ppl
i once found this new guy in kamadan, real friendly kid who just started on a necro 'n stuff
i gave him a woe spreader for free and he thanked me friendly
if people ask stupid questions they're bound to get stupid answers

fixed.
it's an old game. most new people's questions can easily be found on one of the wikis. if you think "here's the wiki page <link>, use it next time and you can find answers for yourself" is a rude, unwelcoming response then you're wrong. it's a lot more helpful than "aww you're new? here, have a cookie. and to answer your question, yes, the max domage on a sword is 15-22. feel free to just ask game mechanic questions like that here, there may or may not be some resource with tons of information about everything in the game out there somewhere."
also,

i didn't start out as a perfect player, but i didn't ask retarded questions on a forum to learn about the game. i used the wiki. and that's how i became the perfect player that i am today.

if anything this point supports hostility toward could-have-been-answered-by-wiki type questions. the wiki is explained in the game's official documentation and you can reach it directly from the game.

Thanks for that _O-. I'm playing it for over 3 years now, and you made me find out about /wiki (+searchterm) .

I think the best way to get flamed on guru is to post in builds section. If you add words "good build" success guaranteed and endless list of flames will appear within few seconds. However if you ask for advice and post your build then you surprisingly will get a lot of very nice and valuable input.

Maybe you are only reading the discussion parts of the entire forum.
You must have had some discussions yourself at one time so you know that debate can heat up from time to time.
People post their findings here and expect others to place their opinion about it.
There are many different people on this forum and they all have a different thing to say so don't just look at all the trolls and flamers because they aren't even half of all the people on here and even they have a right to speak.
I don't see anyone calling people n00bs in the Q&A section, in fact the same people that flame or troll here are very helpfull to new players.
There is only a small portion that is really unreasonable but it's up to you to ignore that kind of members.
If you make a thread and expect everyone to post in a positive way (even is that means not speaking what they think) I suggest you move to the Hello Kitty forum where all is pink and fluffy (no offence).
All I can say is welcome to the forum and although we bark at everyone doesn't mean we bite (most of the time^^)
Make some threads and you'll see what I mean.

What the f*ck are you talking about.
The only time i ever see people dismissing new players is when they make a thread and/or ask a question that as already been asked 5 threads down. Or perhaps a question that like jiggles said, is so painfully obvious (Such as event info that is RIGHT ON the Guild Wars site - litterally a few clicks away) that it gives way to + 1 posts.

My best advice would be to stay away from Riverside Inn when you need help, also because this forum is for discussion mainly.
Chances are good you'd find a warmer welcome if you post in forums such as the campaign specific ones (Prophecies, Factions etc). Or just the Q&A Forum.
If you need help and post it in Riverside, you better write a good, clean and thought-through post, otherwise chances are good people will flame you for it. Why? Because they can, it's as simple as that, how sad it might be.

stitchersflock has a point. Many times new players feel uncertain and do not want canned information. They would like a live answer to their question.
So, do not refer them to the help files, post a bare link to a thread by way of response, or otherwise slap them with a cold fish ... after all what is more fun than being slapped with a cold fish than Maple Story?
I think at present more newcomers ask questions over on gamefaqs simply because amidst flames they also get some helpful answers.
I wish more newcomers would ask questions. By dang, it's so quiet on this forum you can hear the arteries harden!

As with most walks of life some people have time to help with peoples quesions, and some are just as*hats. Once you get used to guru you'll learn which posters actually know what they are talking about and then you can filter out the +1's / bad advice / trolls.
